Food waste produces eight per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions
Food waste produces eight per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions. If food waste was a country it would be the third largest greenhouse gas emitter, behind the USA and China.

RMIT University Photography staff, lecturer Bronek Kózka and Assoc. Prof. Shane Hulbert have partnered with Coles to undertake a research project providing a visual assessment of meat decay over time, specifically a visual comparison of newly developed and existing meat packaging. The images produced from the project will be used as visual communication to inform handling practices in stores where meat products are exposed to varying temperature changes, and to encourage better practices from slaughter to supermarket shelves. This awareness will aid in combating food loss and waste. Globally, around 14% of food produced is lost between harvest and retail, negatively impacting food security and availability, and contributing to the increased cost of food. Efforts to locally reduce food loss and wastage are vital in developing resilient and sustainable commercial practices. (UN - https://lnkd.in/gqXDjYv3)
The research was conducted on-site at Coles Head Office, in their purpose-built testing lab and storage facility. RMIT researcher designed, set up and monitored a 22-day experiment, using time-lapse technology, of the effects various parameters have on meat conditions, and in collaboration with Coles technicians produce a visual resource for use in education, food handling and product awareness.
"The Working Photographer" is a research interest set-up by Bronek and Shane to explore ways in which commissioned photographic practices are used within the broader industry to respond to questions or inquires of visual perception and the capability of photography's visual language and culture. This project will form part of an ongoing narrative around photographic commissioned practices, and their relationship to the evolving nature of working photographers in the 21 century.
The project was supported by Sun Studios / Canon Australia.
