In light of the High Court’s landmark ruling that indefinite immigration detention is unlawful, I reflect on my piece, Fair Dinkum Offshore Processing. The High Court's decision brings a deep sense of affirmation for the message my art sought to express – the silent, corroding figures trapped within wire, standing as a stark emblem of the erosion of human rights in offshore detention.
This ruling aligns with the principles that drove me to create my sculpture: to challenge the status quo and to cast a light on the harsh realities faced by refugees. Today, justice seems a step closer, and the court's decision echoes the core sentiment of my work — that every individual deserves dignity and a timely resolution of their fate.
The tides that once swept away my sculpture, (it was destroyed by a king tide that hit Tamarama beach), also seemed to have carried the old precedents out to sea, making way for a new era of respect for human liberty. I'm hopeful this decision marks the beginning of a more humane approach in our treatment of those seeking refuge on our shores.
