Picturing Community – The School of Art is a Working Photographer initiative…

Picturing Community – The School of Art is a Working Photographer initiative designed to actively engage students in a simulated and controlled client/photographer relationship. A secondary but incredibly important aspect is the sense of belonging that this project generates, embracing the idea of students working with each other, sharing, learning and creating together.
The project is by students, for students – creating a portrait of who we are and how we work.
As the inaugural Picturing Community project, it is my hope the initiative will grow and continue each year, creating an evolving understanding of our community.

Very special thanks to Bronwyn Hughes & Amelia Moodie for their support and making this exhibition possible. Thanks also to Shane Hulbert for his assistance and advice, also this project would not be possible without the studio leads in the School of Art and most importantly the students.

This project resonates with me as I have always seen photography as a means of storytelling. In this instance we are taken into the world of creative arts and the various methods and practices used by up-and-coming artists. More specifically, how diverse and detrimental these practices are in order to produce the final piece.

"I really enjoy working & collaborating with students in the other disciplines in the School of Art.
I believe it's important to see what other creative people are doing, and while painting, drawing & sculpting skills mightn't directly apply to my photographic practice, they help me to look at the world from an angle other than my viewfinder"
