Steppes to Street: Mongolia in Focus Exhibition

Opening Night: 16th of August

Location: down the lane (studio & event) 2/133-135 Johnston Street, Collingwood

Mongolia is a developing nation, and this generation of Mongolians are using photography like never before to express themselves. In partnership with the ‘Batzorig Foundation of Documentary Photography in Mongolia’, Jerry Galea and Bronisław (Bronek) Kozka have curated an exhibition of street photography from Mongolia. The exhibition focuses on the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, exploring the complex urban environment and the challenges of rapid economic development and globalisation to produce a portrait of modern urban life in Mongolia.

The resurgence of street photography in Mongolia is largely due to the accessibility of affordable, easy-to-use cameras, smartphone cameras, and the proliferation of image-sharing platforms on social media. Unlike developed nations, developing countries like Mongolia are experiencing the genre of street photography for the first time. In December 2023, The National Art Gallery of Mongolia held the country's first official street photography exhibition. Young Mongolians are using the power of photography to document contemporary Mongolia and its dramatic changes."

We wish to thank @downthelane_collingwood and Culture Focus , who is panning a 2025 Mongolian Photo Tour to be led by Jerry Galea.
