The campus is alive, it's so great to see students on campus and in classes! The past two years were on tough students (and staff) but also on our industry partners. Most photographers were not able to work at all for much of the time, designers and design studios faced similar story, ad agencies were in a similar place, it was also true for many other of our industry partners. Thankfully things are getting back to normal!
I'm the Client Centred lead in the Photography Discipline, within the School of Art. One of the studios I run is The Working Photographer Studio. It functions along the lines of a professional commercial photographic studio, serving as an umbrella under which students work collectively and individually to learn, build and further develop their skills as thinkers, creative photographers and entrepreneurs.
In this Studio, students learn from working photographers and work with clients across a range of fields such as fashion, advertising, architecture, food and editorial areas to produce new work that addresses their requirements. This was near impossible during lockdown.
This week was an especially exciting week, Michael Torres founder of the indigenous photography (moving image) agency Blak Lens spoke to our students. Michael is a Djugun/Yawuru man from Broome, Western Australia. Blak Lens is a collective of Aboriginal photographers working across different styles and genres of photography and moving image, and it is a first for Australia.
Next week we have Nick Savaidis founder of fair trade apparel company. Founded in 2005 Etiko was the first fashion brand in the southern hemisphere to become Fair Trade Certified. Not only will Nick be sharing the story of Etiko he'll be briefing the students on some collaborative projects.
Each year the participants in The Working Photographer come up with a name to work under, this year they selected Studio52 (we have 50 students and 2 lectures).
