There is something particularly meaningful about having an article on residencies published just as I set off for another one.

My essay, “Residencies as Infrastructure,” is now out in European Photography 119. The piece reflects on residencies not as romantic escapes or simple periods of uninterrupted time, but as complex working structures that shape practice through access, constraint, place, community, and professional exchange.

Drawing on my experiences across programmes including Eyes on Main Street, Swatch Art Peace Hotel, and other residency contexts, the article considers what these environments can make possible, and also what they demand. It looks at the material realities behind residencies, the opportunities they open, the networks they generate, and the ways they can alter the direction of an artist’s work in lasting ways. I will leave the rest for the magazine itself.

It feels well timed, then, to be heading now to La Chapelle Saint-Antoine in Naxos, Greece for a new residency and a new chapter.

I am looking forward to entering that particular space again, where place, time, uncertainty, and method begin to work on you, and where new work often starts to take form before you fully understand what it is becoming.

One chapter in print, another just beginning.
